THE INTERNET IS THE SINGLE LARGEST research resource for the corporate executive. That is the good news; the bad news is that, at times, the amount of information can be overwhelming and distracting.

From personal experience, I know I can easily find myself going down one path and then ending up at another that is somewhat related but not really the exact information I was looking for.
When utilizing the internet to assist you on your new business development, remember to stay focused. If you find yourself suddenly on a website that is only somewhat relevant to your original question, bookmark it in your browser's favorites or make a note to come back to it later. Then get back on track!

In the earlier days of the internet, initially everyone tended to believe whatever information they read there. By and large, people now realize that not everything "published" on the internet is accurate.

When doing research for your job search—or any research for that matter—on the internet, remember to weigh the caliber of the information. To do so, ask yourself these questions:

1. How recent is the information?
When you're dealing with the business of information, much of it is already old by the time you get it. With traditional printed publications your information is usually 12-18 months old. It takes a year to publish most business research books. The internet is better in this area, due to the fact that you will find more current information available on the internet. Try to stay with information that is less than six months old.
With this recession, I have professionally seen more outdated information relative to business statistics. The metrics involving the time to land new business has changed during this recession, and most the internet information has not caught up with the process's current statistics.

2. Does the "author" of the information have a valid professional background relative to the topic?
3. Are there valid sources listed by the writer? Can the information be verified?
4. Does the information found on the site relate to any site advertising? Is the information artificially slanted to support the bias of the advertiser?
5. Does the site look professional and grammatically accurate?

I know all of this may seem overwhelming. How to you get an elephant, “one bite at a time”. Follow the next section and I guarantee you WILL succeed.
